Sun TV Presents 55th Filmfare South Awards in Chennai on July 12

July 10, 2008

A tussle for the 55th Filmfare South Awards is in the offing as some of the best entries are in the fray. The event will be held in Chennai on July 12, with Sun TV as official television partner, Radio Mirchi Chennai as official radio partner. Tiger Balm is the title partner for this event.

In the best film category there are top entertainers like – Sivaji, Pokkiri and Billa pitted against off-beat movies that were critically acclaimed as well as hits at the box-office like – Mozhi and Paruthiveeran. The cream of Kollywood film makers who have directed meaningful films and those appreciated by the masses like Ameer, Radha Mohan, Shankar, Vetrimaran and Prabhu Deva are slugging it out in the best director category.

Those nominated in the ‘best actor’ category (male) are superstars in the industry – Rajinikanth (Sivaji), Vijay (Pokkiri), Ajit (Billa), Karthi (Paruthiveeran) and Sathyaraj (Onbathy Rubai Note). It is a very difficult question – who among them had come out with the best performance as all of them were equally good in the their roles. Take a look at the best actor (female) category – it is even more difficult choice to make – Jyothika (Mozhi), Priyamani (Paruthiveeran), Tamanna (Kaloori), Archana (Onbathu Rupai Note) and Nayanthara (Billa).

Who will walk away with the best music director award this year? Each of the music directors have worked wonders to make the songs chart busters which also resulted in the films doing well at the box office. Will it be AR Rahman nominated for two albums Sivaji and Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Yuvan Shankar Raja (Paruthiveeran), Vidya Sagar (Mozhi) or Harris Jayaraj (Unnale Unnale).

Glancing through the nominations it is quite evident that this year the competition is stiff as there are far too many good films, artists and technicians fighting to lay their hands on the shield of honour. The jury will decide the winners in each category depending on the votes polled.

As a run-up to the event, Radio Mirchi has lined up a host of activities and contests that would run on all its Southern stations – Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Vishakapatnam, Vijaywada, Bangalore and Mangalore.

Sandeep Sud, vice-president and cluster head, Radio Mirchi Chennai, said, “We are delighted to be the official radio partners for the prestigious 55th Tiger Balm Filmfare South Awards, which are considered the Oscars of South India. With this association, Radio Mirchi once again has re-established their strong affiliation with the film industry of the South.”

After Sun TV, Raj TV to also produce Tamil films

May 28, 2008

Even as market leader, Sun TV Network gears up to launch a slew of films, Raj Television Network, which operates general entertainment channels in Tamil and Telugu, is also entering the fray to produce Tamil films.

The company intends to produce 12 Tamil films in the first year and has earmarked a capital outlay of Rs 30 crores for the purpose initially. It has firmed up plans to launch four films in the first week of June, this year, a Tamil film director, on condition of anonymity, said.

M Raajhendran, Chairman and Managing director, Raj TV, declined to comment on the move to produce films. However, it is learnt that the company is planning a event in the first week of June to simultaneously launch four new films. It has entered into strategic tie-ups with film director, T P Gajendran, in addition to producers, A M Ratnam and Kameela Nasser.

While Raj TV Network will fund and produce these films under its own banner, it has tied up with others to act as executive producers and complete the film projects on a first copy basis.

Raj TV intends to market and release the films on its own, through existing distributors. The Tamil film industry, drew several corporate houses, including Moser Baer India, UTV and Adlabs Films to get into film production over the past year, is now seeing television channels enter the fray.

Over the past three months, Sun TV Network has been discreetly working out film production deals with almost all leading stars and a formal announcement is expected in the next couple of weeks. had earlier reported first that the Sun TV Network is gearing up to enter film production. It plans to produce at least 10 feature films each in three languages – Tamil, Telugu and Kannada annually through Sun Pictures, a soon-to-be-floated unit.

Raj TV shares were in the limelight about a year ago, when the relationship between DMK President and Tamil Nadu CM, M Karunanidhi and the Marans turned controversial and bitter.

When the stock market was made to believe that it was Raj TV that’s launching the DMK-based Kalaignar TV, the shares of the company had hit a high of Rs 373.35.
