Discovery adds another $89 million to Oprah Winfrey Network

Oprah Winfrey Network, the joint venture between Discovery Communications and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. is going to get an additional amount of $89 million from Discovery. With this Discovery will increase its investment in the JV.

Discovery’s new investment will be in the form of a revolving loan from Discovery and/or debt financing from a third party lender to OWN.

The amendment allows the joint venture to be granted the right to pursue the distribution of OWN in the United Kingdom and Canada. The parties also agreed to launch OWN on or before 1 January next year.

As per the agreement, Oprah Winfrey will devote more time to this joint venture and would make her presence in more shows.

Discovery Travel and Living renames to TLC on September 1

The lifestyle channel from the house of the world’s leading non-fiction media group, Discovery Travel and Living, is all set to be revamped and don a new name from September 1, 2010 in India.

The Discovery Travel & Living would be re-branded as TLC, Travel & Living Channel. The re-branding exercise is Discovery Communications’ initiative to have a single branding for the channel worldwide.

The Discovery Travel & Living is currently operational in USA as TLC only. The re-branding exercise is to be followed across all of the operational markets for the channel in Asia.

With this re-branding the content of the channel would also receive a facelift wherein a slew of new shows, new hosts and newer locations will be explored. The channel will add around 15 new shows along with new seasons for its already successful shows like ‘Living with a Superstar-Shah Rukh Khan’ and many other hosts are to join the screen presence of TLC in India.

TLC plans to reach the 50 million subscriber mark in the Indian sub-continent this year. It also plans to increase its network to 75 countries by 2011.

TheOneAlliance adds TV Today to its bouquet

TV Today Network has entered into a strategic tie up with TheOneAlliance, a joint venture between SET India and Discovery Communications India to distribute its channels – Aaj Tak, Headlines Today and Tez.

TV Today is a leading news network and has made significant inroads in the International market by launching in US, UK and Continental Europe. With an eye on the future, the network has decided to tap into the domestic subscription market.

G Krishnan, CEO TV Today said, “This is a key development and I am glad we are going to be a part of the One Alliance bouquet. I firmly believe that as a network if we continue to provide compelling content, the viewers will be willing to pay for the channels. I am certain that subscription revenue is going to gather significant momentum in time to come.”

The other channels in TheOneAlliance include Sony Entertainment Television, Max, Sab TV, PIX, AXN, Animax, Discovery, Discovery Travel & Living, MTV, Animal Planet, NDTV 24X7, NDTV India, NDTV Profit, Nick, Ten Sports and VH1.
