Zee Studio in marketing for push for Godfather

Zee Studio, which is airing The Godfather trilogy on Saturdays at 9 pm, has kicked off a campaign.

To pull the younger audience to this Hollywood cult Trilogy, Zee Studio has created a Godfather Face Book page where it is running two contests – Godfather Confessions – Trivia and Post your Godfather Picture.

In Godfather Confessions – Trivia, users will post onto the wall or in the notes section.

In Post your Godfather Picture, users can post their suited up ‘God fatherly’ pictures to get a prize.

Zee Studio is promoting the property off air to build appointment viewership via Sms Godfather Trivia Questions campaign. Questions posted on TV during films have to be answered correctly to win prizes.

Zee Studio has specially branded God Father Buses plying across Mumbai. It has also tied up with a Radio Channel to promote the “Ride The God Father bus”.

In extension to the campaign, a month long theatre slides and Translites in all major Theatre chains in Metros are done. OOH Media has also been tapped to promote the Trilogy.

Zee Studio plans to continue showcasing crime movies in this time band, after it has exhausted the trilogy.

Reliance-CBS announces the launch of 3 channels by year end

Big CBS Networks Pvt. Ltd., the newly constituted joint venture in collaboration with Reliance Broadcasting Network and US major CBS Studios International has announced the launch of three general entertainment channels by the end of year 2010.

Big CBS Prime, Big CBS Spark (youth centric) and Big CBS Love (woman centric) channels will cater to the entertainment needs of English speaking viewers of the country. The channels are expected to roll out in the fourth quarter of 2010 fiscal.

The joint venture with Reliance marks CBS Studios International’s second significant launch of international channels in key markets this year.

“The English GEC space is still small and the market is ripe enough for a new player like us. We are looking at an upper SEC audience as a potential to build and grow the market.” said Tarun Katial (CEO, Reliance Broadcast Network).

The channels will be paid and the company is banking on the subscription based growth to be available for DTH players. Besides Reliance owned DTH company, these channels are also likely to be available for subscription for other DTH players.

Discovery adds another $89 million to Oprah Winfrey Network

Oprah Winfrey Network, the joint venture between Discovery Communications and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Inc. is going to get an additional amount of $89 million from Discovery. With this Discovery will increase its investment in the JV.

Discovery’s new investment will be in the form of a revolving loan from Discovery and/or debt financing from a third party lender to OWN.

The amendment allows the joint venture to be granted the right to pursue the distribution of OWN in the United Kingdom and Canada. The parties also agreed to launch OWN on or before 1 January next year.

As per the agreement, Oprah Winfrey will devote more time to this joint venture and would make her presence in more shows.

Zeel-Nielsen into partnership for monitoring of TV ratings in US

Zee Entertainment Enterprise Limited, the major media conglomerate in India has indulged into a partnership with profound rating firm The Nielsen Company for monitoring of its television ratings in the US broadcasting space.

In an official statement, Bharat Ranga (COO, International Business, ZEEL) said, “We are the only South Asian network to be rated by Nielsen in the US. This reinforces our research-oriented approach to high-quality programming.”

Ranga further added, “Nielsen’s ratings would enable Zee TV to deliver exceptional programming to millions of South Asians, who tune into the network every day and also provide advertisers with deeper insight into audience behaviour and TV trends.”

According to studies, approximately 16.5% of the viewers watch the channels of Zee network in US which also includes a significant 3.8% of South Asians. The data and studies of Nielsen will definitely benefit Zeel in introspection and getting better revenues from the advertisers.

DCTP holds plan of launching its own channel

CTP, a German company indulged in TV production activities is all set to roll out its own 24 hours Television channel on the occasion of next New Year. The channel will telecast qualitative content on topics of society, history, culture and science.

The channel will be accompanied by an extensive on-demand offer through which viewers will be able to obtain more in-depth information on the topics covered by the TV programs.

Topics or issues will be approached from different perspectives in a detailed way in program blocks lasting several hours single.
The productions shown on DCTP.TV will be provided both by DCTP and by partners such as Spiegel TV, Süddeutsche Zeitung TV, NZZ TV and BBC Worldwide. The free-to-air channel aims to finance through advertising and sponsoring.

Sun TV looks for new broadcast deals in current fiscal

After indulging in partnership with DQ Entertainment earlier this year, South India’s premier media entity Sun TV Network is seeking to strike some content broadcasting deals with possible partners in the current fiscal year 2010-2011.

“We run 20 channels so our appetitie for content acquisition is very very high… some of these are with big overseas players and there should at least be 2 or 3 more this year,” Ajay Vidyasagar, chief operating officer, told Reuters in an interview.

ZEEL to offer Zee Cinema and its English GEC in HD format

Premier Cinema channel from the stable of Zee Networks ‘Zee Cinema’ will soon be available in qualitative high definition format to the movie lovers as the company holds firm plans regarding the same. Along with this, an English GEC’s HD launching is also in the pipeline with the company.

The move will be first of its kind for the Zee Group in the country. Just an approval is awaited regarding the same, as the group is keenly looking for the government’s approval.

Afaqs reports that Zee Cinema will be launched first in HD, whereas the other one will be looked after later. However, an expected time for the launch is speculated around two months from now.

DTH and Dish TV will carry these two channels in HD format along with some others. The company is engaged into exercises of moderating the movies and content of English GEC in accordance with the HD format.

Pix to focus on blockbuster content

When it had launched four years back, English movie channel Pix focussed on library movies from Sony and MGM. That gave it an audince that was older than what rivals Star Movies and HBO had. Now, though, the channel is focussing on blockbusters and current films.

New films that will air include The Hurt Locker that won the Best Picture Oscar and District 9.

Says Pix business head Sunder Aaron, “Our aim is to have a 25 per cent share in the genre. Our positioning as a premium Hollywood movie channel has not changed. We are still about telling good stories. But our programming strategy has evolved. The overall strategy in 2006 was to transform the channel into a current film channel. We are following the path that we had laid out for ourselves when we launched the channel. We are going according to plan.”

The aim is to have at least five premieres a month out of which at least one film will be a blockbuster.

Pix seeks to broadbase the audience by attracting the youth. “One of the things that differentiates Pix from the rival channels is that it is operated from here. That allows us to respond quickly to the needs of advertisers and viewers,” says Aaron.

UTV Bindass to launch Emotional Atyachaar 2 on 7 August

UTV Bindass is gearing up to launch the second season of its popular homegrown reality show Emotional Atyachaar on 7 August.

Emotional Atyachaar 2 will be aired every Saturday at 7 pm.

The youth channel from the UTV stable claims that the second season will get bigger and better as it takes the concept of love and fidelity and boils up radical questions, revealing the real truth behind relationships on national television.

The first season revealed the agony and suspicion of 17 couples in all, out of which three couples emerged with a stronger relationship.

The channel has roped in ex Mr India- Pravesh Rana to host Emotional Atyachaar 2.

UTV Bindass business head Nikhil Gandhi said, “Emotional Atyachaar made headlines with its groundbreaking concept which was not only an extremely engaging watch, but also a reflection of what people actually undergo in today’s time. We went forth with the concept of this show initially truly based on intensive consumer research. Emotional Atyachaar soon after its launch got major recognition because it was the first ever reality show to talk about bold topics like infidelity and cheating out in the open. Most of the participants on the show who have taken our support to learn the reality have come back and thanked for providing them eye opening truth. We have received overwhelming response for the show and we expect the same reception all across with our offering of the second season.”

Emotional Atyachaar is being produced by UTV Television with inputs from creative director and writer Roshni Ghosh. The programme is conceptualised by the Bindass team with input from head of programming Shalini Sethi, creative director Shifa and executive producer Piyush Bhatia.

Sony’s Bengali movie channel launches in North America

Sony Entertainment Network (SEN) has launched its Bengali movie channel Aath in North America. The channel will be available on Dish Network
.

Channel Aath is the first and only dedicated Bengali movies channel in India that has a collection of over 1,000 contemporary and classic movies and telefilms .The genre mix includes romantic, action, crime, comedy, drama, horror and literature.

Said channel Aath VP – international business and head of operations for North America Jaideep Janakiram, “We are happy to bring this Bengali movie channel to our North American audience. It is a significant addition to SEN, which strengthens the position of it.”
