Star World to kick off ‘Glee’ on 25 June

June 14, 2010

English general entertainment channel Star World will air the musical comedy Glee from 25 June, every Friday and Saturday at 10 pm.

The show is the brainchild of Ryan Murphy who also created Nip/Tuck and Popular. Glee follows an optimistic high school teacher as he tries to transform the school’s Glee Club and inspire a group of ragtag performers to make it to the biggest competition of them all: Nationals.

The teacher is determined to do whatever it takes to make Glee great again, even though everyone around him thinks he’s nuts. He’s out to prove them all wrong – from his tough-as-nails wife to McKinley’s cheerleading coach to an über-hip world that thinks jazz hands and sequined tuxedos litter the road to infamy rather than pave the way to Hollywood dreams.

The series stars Jane Lynch, Mathew Morrison and Lea Michele.

Star Plus reinvents; wears new look

June 14, 2010

Ten years ago, Star Plus went all-Hindi to give rise to a new wave of ground-breaking shows that redefined the programming strategy for Hindi general entertainment channels. However, a decade later, the society narrated a different story catapulting the need to bring in refreshed communication for the changing viewership preference.

And reading the notes right, Star Plus is now ready to hurl a refreshed and brand new identity to feed the audience needs for the next 10 years.

The channel will launch its new brand logo, dressed in the new-fangled tagline ‘Rishte Wahi, Soch Nayi (Old relationship, New thinking)’ on 13 June with the Star Parivaar Awards 2010.

Dish TV may merge subsidiaries with itself

June 11, 2010

Dish TV is likely to merge its two wholly owned subsidiaries, Agrani Satellite Services and Integrated Subscriber Management Services, with itself.

The move will result in operational efficiencies for Dish TV, India’s largest direct-to-home (DTH) company. “Dish TV is likely to merge its subsidiaries with itself,” market sources said.

When contacted, Dish TV managing director Jawahar Goel declined to comment. The company’s board will meet on Friday to consider a proposal for internal business restructuring between the company and its wholly owned subsidiaries.

According to sources, Agrani Satellite Services has shelved its plans to acquire a stake and invest $64 million in ProtoStar satellite. The plan was to have the Ku-band transponders for Dish TV as it expanded its channel offerings to its DTH subscribers.

Meanwhile, ProtoStar has filed for bankruptcy. The satellite services provider was formed to acquire, launch and operate high-power geostationary satellites to lease capacity to Asian DTH and broadband service providers.

Agrani, which owns a licence to own, operate and launch a satellite, has invested Rs 940 million in the last fiscal.

Integrated Subscriber Management Services, a company that deals with data management services, was initially designed to service other DTH service providers as well. But with Dish TV posting rapid growth and spreading its subscriber base to over seven million, the subscriber management system handles only its parent company’s operations.

Dish TV also holds 51 per cent stake in Agrani Convergence Ltd, a company that is in a dormant stage.

Shares of Dish TV rose 5.35 per cent to close Thursday at Rs 42.30 on the BSE.

Dish TV to role out Conditional Access Module

June 11, 2010

On the launching of Dish TV’s HD service, CEO Salil Kapoor reveals company’s plans of facilitating viewers with the option of switching its existing operator without changing the set top box. This facility will be made possible with the deployment of Conditional Access Module (CAM) device.

The new development is expected to be implemented in next 2 months. With this tool, subscribers of different DTH operators will be able to get broader transmission options without any extra cost.

CAM is a device which offers inter-switching ability to the user. This data card when inserted into a set top box of any DTH operator provides several options.

“With new cost-effective and optimal priced services such as DTH and HD, we can reduce the subsidy on the installation cost and thus attain break-even in two years,” he said.

The guidelines for such inter-usability of DTH equipment have been laid down by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in the licensing norms and the regulator was likely to intervene in case any operator did not have the requisite provisions.
